What is window condensation?
Window condensation, frost, and even ice on the inside of windows is formed when warm, moist air comes into contact with cool, dry air. This typically happens in most modern homes on and around openings, like windows and doors.
Are my windows to blame?
Your windows are not to blame, and you may have noticed that the issue actually became more prevalent after window replacement or in a newer home with updated windows.
What causes window condensation?
Window condensation is caused by warm, moist air and cool, dry air coming into contact with one another. Because of modern insulation and construction materials, which are designed to keep 100{4c8fd0987a672ac4f7f6915f4c64b1fcd7534767d6f45f4e3d72857a7b8808b2} of the cool air outside and the warm air in (and vice-versa in the summer), the only place where these air types come into contact with each other is on the window or door surface. This condition may have seemed to “worsen” if you installed new windows to replace old, drafty windows, but in fact this is a significant improvement!
How can I relieve my home of window condensation?
You can reduce the appearance of condensation on your windows by cracking a window open to help normalize the air temperature and humidity around your windows. Do this for a short period of time each day to ensure that you don’t let all the heat out, but that the air humidity indoors and outdoors is equivalent.
Running exhaust fans inside the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room can also help remove humidity from inside, so your windows won’t fog. Another option is to make sure all drapes and blinds are open (so humidity isn’t trapped between the window treatment and window) and install a dehumidifier to remove excess humidity inside.
