Improve Your Current Windows
While you may ultimately want to replace ill-performing windows, there are a few things you can try before making that final decision:
Storm Windows
Storm windows are an additional retrofit to your current windows, which can be installed internally or externally. They can be made of glass, rigid plastic, or flexible plastic and can be permanent or temporary, and they function similarly to insulated glazing.
Caulking
Applying updated caulk to your window frame on the inside or outside (or both) can help if you can feel a small draft around the window frame.
Weather Stripping
If you can identify specific leaky spots in your window frames, your windows may benefit from weather stripping.
Choosing New, Energy Efficient Windows
There are many types of new windows and components that you should take into consideration:
Awning Windows
Hinged at the top and open outwards. They are typically wider than they are tall and have an opening sash for side-to-side ventilation.
Casement
Hinged on the side and open outward to the left or right. They are typically taller than wide and receive top-to-bottom ventilation.
Fixed
Don’t open at all, but are very energy efficient, as they don’t have to accommodate for sealing openings.
Hopper
Hinged at the bottom and open outwards. They are typically wider than they are tall and accommodate side-to-side ventilation.
Single- and Double-Hung
Single-hung windows are standard windows – with a sliding panel that can be opened from top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top. Double-hung windows are a side-by-side version of the single-hung. These windows are typically taller than they are wide.
Single- and Double-Sliding
Single-sliding windows are a sideways version of the single-hung window. Double-sliding windows are a side-by-side version of the single-sliding. These windows are typically wider than they are tall.
