Roof Repairs Weren’t Cutting It For Michelle’s
Chicagoland Home, So We Delivered A
Much Better, Longer-Lasting Solution
Apex Saved The Day By Solving The Cause,
Replacing Her Ailing Roof, And More
What type of Chicagoland roofing services do you need for your local home? Repairs are great for relatively minor roof damage. But you may need a roof replacement to address more widespread problems.
This was the case for Tanglewood homeowner Michelle V.
She first contacted Apex Exteriors for an expert repair of her aging, heavily damaged cedar shake roof.
But every time we sealed one leak, another trouble spot developed elsewhere. What’s more, Michelle’s attic was poorly insulated. As a result, she faced unpleasant second-floor living conditions every winter and summer.
To address these issues, we worked closely with Michelle to find a more comprehensive solution. The end result was a customized approach that met her specific needs.
When we were done, her home was protected long-term by new premium-grade roofing materials. And the vast improvements we made in her attic insulation helped ensure year-round indoor comfort.
Michelle Chooses Roof Repair As Her First Option
Cedar shake roofs are common across Chicagoland. Unfortunately, much of that cedar is of inferior quality. This means that a lot of local homes aren’t as well-protected from outside conditions as they should be.
So, when Michelle contacted Apex Exteriors to say her roof needed help, we weren’t surprised.
With the roof visibly leaking down to the drywall ceiling inside, we knew the problem was serious.
In fact, Michelle’s roof was a potential candidate for a roof replacement. However, our initial choice of roofing service was a repair that would seal the leak and hopefully give the roof a couple more years of life.

Two Expert Repairs, But The Problems Keep Coming
At Apex, we’re well-versed in cedar shake repair. Using the best techniques currently available, we sealed the breaches in Michelle’s roof.
But the fix was only temporary.
Soon, new leaks formed in other places. And rainwater continued to find its way into her home. So, for the second time in just a few months, Michelle contacted us for help.
After a temporary repair on the second leaking area, the conversation quickly turned to the inevitable: a full roof replacement was needed.
A Roof Replacement And Help For Michelle’s Attic
Michelle agreed. In consultation with her, we developed a plan of attack for her outdated roof.
For her primary roofing materials, she chose CertainTeed Grand Manor shingles. This exceptional product is preferred by insurance companies for its maximum Class 4 impact rating. It also mimics the prized look of natural slate without the high price tag or need for extra structural support.
Michelle selected a different option for the roof over her entry porch. Here, she went with decorative, standing-seam metal panels.
Extra Insulation To Make Her Roofing Services More Effective
In the typical home, the roof and attic work together. Your roof provides a weathertight outer envelope. Proper attic ventilation helps keep the roof healthy long-term.
Your attic also plays another important role. Namely, it helps keep unconditioned air from affecting your indoor living conditions.
Adequate insulation is essential to this vital function.
Unfortunately, the insulation in Michelle’s attic was barely getting the job done. There just wasn’t enough of it. As a result, the floor below felt too hot in the summer and too cold during our sometimes brutal winters.
Our solution? Add enough insulation to bring the attic’s protection level up from a measly R-16 to a robust R-49. We also added over a dozen more soffit vents to get the attic ventilation up to proper performance levels.

Additional Services For Her Chicagoland Home
Roofing services aren’t your only available option at Apex Exteriors. In fact, we’re your all-around exterior specialists.
Our wide-ranging professional skill set came in handy on Michelle’s project.
How?
Some of the cedar siding adjacent to her old roofing had rotted away.
So, we made plans to remove this rotten material as part of the flashing installation for the new roof. In its place would go high-quality siding of the same design.

Beautiful Results And Another Happy Roofing Customer
Michelle’s roof installation was pleasantly trouble-free, as were her insulation installation and siding replacement.
We have to say, the results were fantastic.
Nothing gives us more joy than helping local residents like Michelle. And she was just as happy to have a newly protected and insulated home.
