Apex Exteriors Reveals How
Color Affects Roof Lifespan
When selecting roof shingles in Glen Ellyn, IL, your color choice affects much more than just curb appeal. The color of your shingles directly affects their longevity, energy efficiency, and overall performance in DuPage County’s challenging climate.
At Apex Exteriors, we’ve helped countless homeowners understand the science behind shingle color selection and its long-term implications.
The right color choice can add years to your roof’s lifespan while reducing energy costs and maintenance requirements.
Your shingle color decision should be as carefully considered as choosing the perfect spot for a picnic at Lake Ellyn Park – both require understanding how environmental factors affect long-term enjoyment and performance.
The Science Behind Color And Roofing
Shingle Performance In Glen Ellyn, IL
Shingle color affects heat absorption through basic physics principles that directly impact material longevity. Dark colors absorb more solar radiation, raising surface temperatures and accelerating aging in asphalt shingles.
Light-colored shingles reflect more sunlight, maintaining lower surface temperatures that reduce thermal stress and extend the lifespan of the material.
This temperature difference can be 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit between dark and light shingles on the same roof.
Thermal cycling occurs when shingles repeatedly heat up during the day and cool down at night. Darker shingles experience more extreme temperature swings, leading to faster deterioration of the asphalt matrix and granule adhesion.
UV radiation affects all shingle colors, but darker colors absorb more UV energy, accelerating the breakdown of chemical bonds in the asphalt. Professional installation with quality roofing materials helps maximize lifespan regardless of color choice.
How Different Roofing Shingle Colors
Perform In Glen Ellyn, IL’s Climate
Light gray and white shingles typically offer the longest lifespan in DuPage County’s climate, often lasting 25-30 years with proper maintenance.
These colors reflect the most solar energy, reducing thermal stress and UV damage.
Medium-toned colors like tan, light brown, and muted blues provide a good balance between aesthetics and longevity. These shingles typically achieve 20-25 years of reliable performance when properly installed and maintained.
Dark colors, including black, dark brown, and deep green, absorb the most heat, potentially reducing lifespan to 15-20 years in extreme cases.
However, modern shingle technology has significantly improved dark color performance.
Red and burgundy shingles fall into the medium category for longevity, though certain red pigments may fade more quickly than others. Quality manufacturers now offer fade-resistant formulations that maintain color integrity longer.
Energy Efficiency Considerations For
Glen Ellyn, IL Roofing Shingles
Cool roofing colors can reduce cooling costs by 10-15% during DuPage County’s hot summer months. Light-colored shingles help keep attic temperatures lower, reducing the workload on your air conditioning system.
Reducing the heat island effect benefits both your home and the broader community.
Light-colored roofing helps reduce urban heat buildup, contributing to more comfortable outdoor temperatures in residential areas.
Winter performance varies by color, with darker shingles melting snow and ice more quickly. This can reduce ice dam formation, though proper attic insulation and ventilation remain the primary prevention methods.
Energy Star-qualified shingles are available in various colors and offer verified energy-efficiency benefits. Our team specializes in home efficiency improvements that deliver measurable results for Chicagoland area homeowners.
Architectural Shingle Style And Color
Longevity Considerations
Traditional home styles often feature darker shingle colors that complement brick and stone exteriors.
While these colors may have shorter lifespans, proper installation and maintenance can maximize their performance.
Contemporary architectural styles increasingly favor lighter colors that offer both aesthetic appeal and longevity benefits. These colors work well with modern siding materials and energy-efficient design principles.
Historic home restoration may require specific color choices to maintain architectural authenticity.
In these cases, premium shingle grades and enhanced maintenance schedules help achieve acceptable longevity despite color limitations.
Neighborhood aesthetics and HOA requirements sometimes influence color choices. Working with experienced roofing contractors helps balance aesthetic requirements with performance considerations.
Modern Roofing Shingle Technology And
Color Performance Improvements
Advanced granule technology has significantly improved dark color performance over the past few years. Reflective granules and improved asphalt formulations help darker shingles last longer than older products.
Cool color technology allows dark-appearing shingles to reflect more infrared radiation while maintaining their visual appearance.
These products offer improved longevity without sacrificing aesthetic preferences.
Algae-resistant shingles incorporate copper granules that prevent unsightly black streaks, maintaining appearance and performance over time.
This technology is particularly beneficial for lighter colors that show staining more readily.
Impact-resistant shingles are available in all colors and provide enhanced durability against hail and wind damage. These products often come with extended warranties that reflect their superior performance.
Glen Ellyn, IL Roofing Shingle Maintenance
Requirements By Color Choice
Light-colored shingles may show dirt and debris more readily but typically require less frequent replacement due to their longer lifespan. Regular cleaning helps maintain their reflective properties and appearance.
Dark-colored shingles hide dirt better but may require more frequent inspection for heat-related damage. Early detection of granule loss or cracking helps prevent more extensive problems.
Algae and moss growth appear more prominently on light-colored shingles, requiring periodic cleaning or treatment.
However, the overall maintenance costs are often lower due to extended replacement intervals.
Professional maintenance programs help maximize lifespan regardless of color choice. Our comprehensive exterior maintenance services ensure all roofing components receive proper care throughout their lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Glen
Ellyn, IL Shingle Color And Longevity
Most homeowners choose roof shingle colors purely for aesthetics, never realizing that their color choice directly impacts how long their roof will last. Here are the answers to the most common questions we hear from DuPage County residents about the relationship between shingle color and durability.
Am I Within Your Service Area?
Our main office is in South Elgin, IL, but we serve the vast majority of the Chicagoland area, as well as South Wisconsin’s Like Geneva area..
Maybe you live on the cusp or toward the outside of the region. That’s okay. Contact us, and we’ll let you know whether you’re within reach within a minute. You can also visit our Service Areas page for more info.
Are You Considered An ‘Expensive’ Siding Contractor?
We wouldn’t say we’re known as expensive, but will we put our name on cheap, low-quality siding materials and workmanship? Absolutely not. Our estimates tend to be more in the middle—easy to understand and transparent. We charge reasonable rates for work you can count on, which is why we maintain such a low rate of warranty-related callbacks.
Can I Count On Apex To Be Honest?
People unfamiliar with us and our strong company culture might worry we’ll be dishonest and try to upsell a more expensive siding installation when all that’s needed are repairs and maintenance. Rest assured, this isn’t possible. We back all our estimates and recommendations with enough data to erase doubt.
Our inspection and assessment will answer all your questions. We’re not salespeople. We’re long-standing, reputable exterior remodeling professionals.

How Do I Know It’s Time For Full Siding Replacement?
If you need expert guidance, that’s what we’re here for. Generally speaking, we’ll consider the age of your siding and look for wear and tear that’s brought it beyond the repair phase. Or, to the point where it makes much more sense to replace it than to keep trying to patch it up.
Some warping, cracking, or peeling paint is fine. But when things like water/wind damage and a dramatic decline in efficiency are on the table, it’s time to consider replacement. For some folks, it’s more about increasing home value and enjoying a new, refreshed, polished aesthetic.
Is Your Company Licensed, Bonded & Insured?
This is an important question to ask before signing any contract for any work to be performed on your home by a contractor. Apex Exteriors does hold local licenses in all applicable cities and municipalities that require contractors to be licensed for all work performed in Illinois. We are also insured with an umbrella policy of $5,000,000 in coverage.
Being bonded basically translates to that we (Apex Exteriors) has purchased a surety bond, also known as a third-party guarantee, that is built to protect you financially if we were to fail to complete the job you contracted us to perform, or if we were to violate the terms of our agreement/contract, and lastly if we were to fail to pay our suppliers or applicable subcontractors.
We can also pull any required permits in your city/municipality per your request. FYI – The state of Illinois does not require a license to operate a siding installation company.
What Other Exterior Remodeling Services Do You Provide?
Along with siding installation and repair (as well as attic insulation installation), we can help you with:
- Residential roofing installations and roof repairs
- Velux skylight replacements
- Window replacement
- Entry door replacement
- New home gutters, soffit, and fascia

What should I do to prepare for my homes residing project?
Outdoor Furniture & Grills. Our team will always take precautions to protect your outdoor furniture, BBQ grills and general “valuables” but to avoid any potential, albeit unlikely damage, we would advise that you kindly move any outdoor furniture, umbrellas, bbq grills, etc. as far away from the immediate exterior perimeter of your home.
Window Screens. If you have any window screens on your windows, we would advise that you remove those before our crew arrives to avoid any potential tears. We do our absolute best to avoid nicking existing window screens during the siding installation process, but things can happen on the job site.
Interior Hanging Valuables. If you have any valuable pictures or expensive artwork hanging from your interior walls, we would kindly advise that you remove those from your walls. It’s not common, but hanging art, pictures or other valuables attached to your homes exterior walls could come loose from the hammering or general fastening of the new siding to your home. Better to be safe than sorry here right?
Logistics. If you have a driveway that may be used for our crew’s staging purposes (trucks, materials, saws/tools, dumpster, etc.) we would advise that if you needed to get a car out of your garage to do so ahead of our crew’s arrival to your property ahead of time to ensure we aren’t blocking your access and you aren’t caught in a position where your vehicle is “stuck” until our job is complete.
What Siding Products or Materials Do You Use?
Apex Exteriors proudly installs premium vinyl siding by brands like CertainTeed and Mastic (Ply Gem). We also install a lot of fiber cement siding by the category leader, James Hardie (HardiePlank, HardiePanel, Hardie Architectural Panel, HardieShingle, HardieSoffit, HardieTrim, Hardie Artisan Siding, and HardiePanel with HardieTrim battens).
Additionally, we install more than our fair share of engineered wood siding and trim by LP (Louisiana-Pacific) known as LP SmartSide (Lap Siding, Trim & Fascia, Nickel Gap Siding, Soffit, and Shake Lap Siding).
We also use AZEK Exteriors PVC siding and trim that is quickly gaining popularity due to its extreme durability characteristics. Aluminum siding is nearly extinct due to the cost and alternatives available, but we do carry a metal siding product by EDCO which is made from hot-dipped galvanized steel.
For something altogether different, we also carry and install an engineered mortarless stone veneer product called Versetta Stone which looks great for full exterior walls and accents. Lastly, we still install the “oldies but goodies” like natural western red cedar & eastern white cedar plank/clapboard/lap siding as well as cedar shingle siding.
Sadly we do less and less cedar installation as the years go by due to the ever-increasing costs of natural cedar and the increased competition of man-made alternatives like James Hardie and LP SmartSide that accurately mimic the look of natural cedar with the additional benefits of being nearly maintenance free that today’s customer demands.
Why should I hire Apex Exteriors to replace my siding?
Great question! Below are the top five reasons you should seriously consider hiring Apex Exteriors to install your new siding:
Experience
We have been installing and repairing siding for over 30 years in Chicagoland so we’ve literally seen it all. This makes a difference because our crew has decades of experience removing, repairing and replacing siding for homeowners. This also tells you that we are in it for the long haul… so if a problem does arise years from now, we will be here to remedy the situation with empathy and professionalism.
Reputation
We have worked diligently to exceed our customers’ expectations, and the proof of those efforts can be found from our reputation online. We have earned 250+ Google Reviews with a 4.8 star rating, earned an A+ rating from the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and have enthusiastic reviews on other review sites like Facebook, Angi and Houzz. You don’t earn this by being average. You don’t even get here by being good at just installing new siding on a home.
We found ourselves here because every employee shows up every day for our customers and we take real pride in our work and it shows.
Labor
Unlike most of the competition, we DO NOT hire out subcontractors to install new siding on our customers’ homes. We exclusively deploy full-time in-house crew members that are continuously trained to OSHA safety standards, fall protection standards, as well as siding installation best practices which keep our installation teams out in front of our competition.
This is a critical point because subcontractors are often unskilled, unsafe, and unreliable, causing major issues on how the siding was installed to your home, the longevity of the installation and for meeting the timeline agreed upon when you signed a contract. Don’t take unnecessary risks with protecting and maintaining what is likely your largest investment. We won’t be.
Certifications & Credentials
We are very proud to have earned the highest level of credentials with James Hardie, the maker of the highly sought-after “HardiePlank” and “HardieShingle” fiber cement premium siding products, often called “Hardie Board.”
We have earned the Hardie Elite Preferred status due to the volume of product we install on homes and buildings in our market but as importantly, because of the extensive training our installation teams have received from James Hardie ensuring that our installations are “by the book” and exactly how James Hardie requires. The required tools, caulking, fastening and flashing are unique to Hardie Board and strict adherence to installation best practices are necessary.
The benefits of this knowledge and partnership are numerous. First off, this gives our customers true peace of mind knowing that a substantial investment in their home’s exterior is going to be completed following the MFG’s best practices the first time by true installation experts. You would be shocked at how many times we’ve had to reinstall Hardie Siding on a home after the homeowner originally hired the “B-Team.”
Lastly, the adherence to these strict manufacturer standards also helps to solidify the product’s 30-year non-prorated warranty. It puts us in a small group of local siding companies and that’s a real distinction with a real difference that our customers value.
Additionally, we have earned the highest level of credentialing with CertainTeed, the maker of the finest replacement vinyl siding available. This is now known as the CertainTeed SidingMaster Premier and formerly known as CertainTeed SidingMaster Select status. This honor places us in the top 1% of siding installation contractors in our market.
The combination of the volume of product we purchase and install, as well as the extensive training and continued education requirements we must meet, elevates Apex Exteriors into exclusive company.
Siding Materials
Siding replacement is really only as good as the siding materials used and the crew actually installing it. Why do we install so much James Hardie fiber cement and CertainTeed vinyl siding? Because they are true leaders in their category and our customers demand and expect the best.
The nearly endless color options and profile selection options with James Hardie products (HardiePlank, HardiePanel, HardieTrim Batten Boards, HardieShingle) and profile options of CertainTeed replacement vinyl siding (Beaded, Shakes and Shingles, Board & Batten, Dutch Lap, Rough Sawn, and Smooth) really deliver on our customers’ design goals.
Sure, we install other products like AZEK lap siding, LP SmartSide, Mastic, and even real cedar siding, but from a cost/benefits perspective these are our top brands we install often and for good reason.
The deep partnerships and accreditations we have earned with both James Hardie and CertainTeed also allow us to provide unmatched extended warranties directly to our customers. This is a real difference our customers value, and we hope you will too.
