How Often Does Your Naperville, IL Home Need
Siding Replacement Or Maintenance?
Apex Exteriors Reveals The Truth
About Siding Lifespans
Most contractors will tell you siding lasts “20-30 years” and needs “minimal maintenance.” That’s marketing speak, not reality for siding replacement in Naperville, IL. The truth depends on your material choice, installation quality, and specific weather challenges.
At Apex Exteriors, we’ve maintained and replaced thousands of siding installations. We know precisely when maintenance makes sense and when replacement becomes inevitable.
Your siding maintenance schedule should deliver the same lasting results you see at Naper Settlement – where proper care keeps structures looking great and functioning perfectly for generations.
The Siding Maintenance Myth That
Costs Homeowners Thousands
“Maintenance-free siding” doesn’t exist.
Every siding material requires some level of care, inspection, and eventual attention. The difference lies in the frequency, complexity, and cost of that maintenance.
Vinyl siding needs annual washing and periodic caulk touch-ups. Fiber cement requires repainting every 10-15 years. Wood siding demands constant vigilance against moisture, insects, and UV damage.
But here’s what most homeowners don’t realize – proper maintenance can double your siding’s lifespan while neglect can cut it in half.
What “Low Siding Maintenance” In
Naperville, IL Actually Means
Low maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance.
It means predictable, manageable care that doesn’t require constant attention or expensive emergency repairs.
Quality siding materials handle temperature swings, moisture cycles, and UV exposure without frequent intervention.
Vinyl siding truly requires minimal maintenance. Annual washing, occasional caulk repairs, and prompt attention to damage keep vinyl in good condition for 25-35 years.
Fiber cement siding requires more attention but delivers superior durability. Periodic painting, caulk maintenance, and moisture monitoring ensure reliable performance for 40-50 years.
The key is understanding your material’s specific needs and addressing them proactively. Our team specializes in comprehensive exterior maintenance that prevents minor issues from becoming costly problems.
And our siding expertise helps homeowners understand realistic performance expectations for different siding materials in DuPage and Will Counties’ challenging climate conditions.
The Real Maintenance Schedule
For Different Siding Materials
Let’s talk actual timelines, not marketing promises.
- Vinyl Siding – Annual washing and inspection, caulk touch-ups every 3-5 years, replacement at 25-35 years.
- Fiber Cement – Annual inspection, repainting every 7-10 years, comprehensive maintenance every 15-20 years, replacement at 40-50 years.
- Wood Siding – Staining every 2-3 years, annual moisture inspection, comprehensive refinishing every 5-7 years, replacement at 20-30 years.
Most contractors won’t give you these honest timelines because they prefer selling “maintenance-free” dreams.
When Siding Maintenance Becomes More
Expensive Than Siding Replacement
Savvy homeowners recognize the tipping point.
When annual maintenance costs exceed $2,000-$3,000, replacement often makes more financial sense.
This typically happens when siding reaches 70-80% of its expected lifespan.
Multiple system failures indicate replacement time. When you’re dealing with widespread caulk failure, paint adhesion problems, and moisture intrusion simultaneously, piecemeal repairs become counterproductive.
Energy-efficiency declines signal aging siding systems. Increased heating and cooling costs often indicate that your siding’s insulation properties have deteriorated beyond economical repair.
Our experienced team helps homeowners navigate this decision with honest assessments of repair versus replacement costs and long-term value considerations.
Signs It’s Time For Siding Replacement
In Naperville, IL, Not Maintenance
Widespread caulk failure indicates system-wide aging.
When multiple areas need attention simultaneously, replacement often costs less than comprehensive repairs. Maintaining aging siding is a losing battle against time and weather.
Energy bill increases signal declining performance. Siding that no longer provides adequate insulation wastes money every month through higher utility costs.
Frequent repair needs indicate the end of useful life. When you’re calling contractors multiple times per year, replacement makes more financial sense than continued maintenance.

How Long Have You Been In The Siding Business?
We’ve been in the Chicagoland exterior remodeling industry since the late 1980s, when we were known by a different name. When a partner retired and we wanted to expand our company’s reach, we switched names to Apex Exteriors in 2008. Learn more about our company’s story. Siding installation and repairs are a very significant portion of our business. It’s second to only roofing…and not by much. With that history combined with our siding business concentration, you can be confident in knowing you are dealing with a legitimate siding contractor and not some “fly by night” shop.
Is Your Company Licensed, Bonded & Insured?
This is an important question to ask before signing any contract for any work to be performed on your home by a contractor. Apex Exteriors does hold local licenses in all applicable cities and municipalities that require contractors to be licensed for all work performed in Illinois. We are also insured with an umbrella policy of $5,000,000 in coverage.
Being “bonded” basically translates to that we (Apex Exteriors) has purchased a surety bond, also known as a third-party guarantee, that is built to protect you financially if we were to fail to complete the job you contracted us to perform, or if we were to violate the terms of our agreement/contract, and lastly if we were to fail to pay our suppliers or applicable subcontractors. We can also pull any required permits in your city/municipality per your request. FYI – The state of Illinois does not require a license to operate a siding installation company.
What Other Exterior Remodeling Services Do You Provide?
Along with siding installation and repair, we offer the following residential services:
What Siding Products or Materials Do You Use?
Apex Exteriors proudly installs premium vinyl siding by brands like CertainTeed and Mastic (PlyGem). We also install a lot of fiber cement siding by the category leader, James Hardie (Hardie Plank, Hardie Board, Hardie Architectural Panel, Hardie Shingle, Hardie Soffit, Hardie Trim, Hardie Artisan Siding, and Hardie Board & Batten). Additionally, we install more than our fair share of engineered wood siding and trim by LP (Louisiana-Pacific) known as LP SmartSide (Lap Siding, Trim & Fascia, Nickel Gap Siding, Soffit, and Shake Lap Siding).
We also use AZEK Exteriors PVC siding and trim that is quickly gaining popularity due to its extreme durability characteristics. Aluminum siding is nearly extinct due to the cost and alternatives available, but we do carry a metal siding product by EDCO which is made from hot-dipped galvanized steel.
For something altogether different, we also carry and install an engineered mortarless stone veneer product called Versetta Stone which looks great for full exterior walls and accents. Lastly, we still install the “oldies but goodies” like natural western red cedar & eastern white cedar plank/clapboard/lap siding as well as cedar shingle siding. Sadly we do less and less cedar installation as the years go by due to the ever-increasing costs of natural cedar and the increased competition of man-made alternatives like James Hardie and LP SmartSide that accurately mimic the look of natural cedar with the additional benefits of being nearly maintenance free that today’s customer demands.
What Types Of Siding Can You Repair?
We work with basically all of the most common siding types you see in the Chicagoland area and then some: Vinyl, fiber cement (James Hardie), metal, engineered wood (LP SmartSide), faux cedar options, actual cedar siding, cedar shingle, pine, and more. It’s worth mentioning that we specialize in siding repairs and installs and as such, we send specific team members (in-house, not subcontractors) to your home with the material expertise your home requires ensuring the repair is done properly, expertly, the first time. We will never send “generalists” to your property to fix your siding issues.
Why should I hire Apex Exteriors to replace my siding?
Great question! Below are the top (5) reasons you should seriously consider hiring Apex Exteriors to install your new siding:
Experience
We have been installing and repairing siding for over 30 years in Chicagoland so we’ve literally seen it all. This makes a difference because our crew has decades of experience removing, repairing and replacing siding for homeowners. This also tells you that we are in it for the long haul… so if a problem does arise years from now, we will be here to remedy the situation with empathy and professionalism
Reputation
We have worked diligently to exceed our customers’ expectations, and the proof of those efforts can be found from our reputation online. We have earned 250+ Google Reviews with a 4.8 star rating, earned an A+ rating from the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and have enthusiastic reviews on other review sites like Facebook, Angi and Houzz. You don’t earn this by being average. You don’t even get here by being good at just installing new siding on a home. We found ourselves here because every employee shows up every day for our customers and we take real pride in our work and it shows.
Labor
Unlike most of the competition, we DO NOT hire out subcontractors to install new siding on our customers’ homes. We exclusively deploy full-time in house crewmembers that are continuously trained to OSHA safety standards, fall protection training, as well as siding installation best practices which keep our installation teams out in front of our competition. This is a critical point because subcontractors are often unskilled, unsafe, and unreliable causing major issues on how the siding was installed to your home, the longevity of the installation and for meeting the timeline agreed upon when you signed a contract. Don’t take unnecessary risks with protecting and maintaining what is likely your largest investment. We won’t be.
Certifications & Credentials
We are very proud to have earned the highest level of credentials with James Hardie, the maker of highly sought after “Hardie Board”, “Hardie Plank” and “Hardie Shingle” fiber cement premium siding products. We have earned the Hardie Elite Preferred status due to the volume of product we install on homes and buildings in our market but as importantly, because of the extensive training our installation teams have received from James Hardie ensuring that our installations are “by the book” and exactly how James Hardie requires. The required tools, caulking, fastening and flashing are unique to Hardie Board and strict adherence to installation best practices are necessary.
The benefits of this knowledge and partnership are numerous. First off, this gives our customers true peace of mind knowing that a substantial investment in their home’s exterior is going to be completed following the MFG’s best practices the first time by true installation experts. You would be shocked at how many times we’ve had to reinstall Hardie Siding on a home after the homeowner originally hired the “B-Team.” Lastly, the adherence to these strict manufacturer standards also helps to solidify the product’s 30-year non-prorated warranty. It quite literally puts us in the top 1% of local siding companies and that’s a real distinction with a real difference that our customers value.
Additionally, we have earned the highest level of credentialing with CertainTeed, the maker of the finest replacement vinyl siding available. This is now known as the CertainTeed SidingMaster Premier and formerly known as CertainTeed SidingMaster Select status. This honor places us in the top 1% of siding installation contractors in our market. The combination of the volume of product we purchase and install, as well as the extensive training and continued education requirements we must meet, elevates Apex Exteriors into exclusive company.
Siding Materials
Siding replacement is really only as good as the siding materials used and the crew actually installing it. Why do we install so much James Hardie fiber cement and CertainTeed vinyl siding? Because they are true leaders in their category and our customers demand and expect the best. The nearly endless color options and profile selection options with James Hardie products (Hardie Plank, Hardie Panel, Hardie Trim Batten Boards, Hardie Shingle) and profile options of CertainTeed replacement vinyl siding (Beaded, Shakes and Shingles, Board & Batten, Dutchlap, Rough Sawn, and Smooth) really deliver on our customers’ design goals. Sure, we install other products like AZEK lap siding, LP SmartSide, Mastic, and even real cedar siding, but from a cost/benefits perspective these are our top (2) brands we install often and for good reason.
The deep partnerships and accreditations we have earned with both James Hardie and CertainTeed also allow us to provide unmatched extended warranties directly to our customers. This is a real difference our customers’ value and we hope you will too.
