Winter can stress roofing, siding, trim, gutters, and sealants—sometimes in ways you don’t notice until spring rains arrive. In this guide, you’ll get an exterior maintenance checklist in Arlington Heights, IL after winter, including what to inspect first, what signs call for professional help, and how routine exterior checkups can help you avoid bigger repairs.
Exterior Maintenance Checklist After
An Arlington Heights, IL Winter
Why Exterior Maintenance
Matters After Winter
After months of snow, ice, wind, and freeze-thaw cycles, it’s smart to schedule exterior maintenance in Arlington Heights, IL. If not, small problems can turn into water intrusion or structural wear.
Winter can loosen shingles, strain gutters, crack caulk lines, and expose weak flashing points around roof transitions. A spring checklist helps you prioritize what to inspect and what to repair first.
In our community, many homeowners start noticing exterior issues when they get back outside and visit community spots like Lake Arlington Park. Even if your home looks fine from the curb, winter damage often shows up in details like trim seams, fascia edges, and downspout connections.
A consistent exterior maintenance routine in Cook County, IL supports longer material life, cleaner curb appeal, and fewer surprise repairs during storm season.
Exterior Roof Checkups For Arlington Heights,
Illinois Home Exterior Maintenance
Start with the roof, because even minor issues can lead to interior damage.
Look for missing, lifted, or cracked shingles, as well as exposed nail heads or loose ridge caps. Pay attention to roof valleys and to penetrations such as vents, skylights, and chimneys. These are common leak points after ice and wind.
You may be unsure what “normal wear” looks like versus a real problem. However, keeping a reference, such as a roof maintenance guide, can help you recognize when it’s time to call a professional.
It can also help to understand how different materials hold up over time. Comparing roofing options can provide context when you’re deciding whether repairs make sense or if longer-term planning is needed.
Gutters and Downspouts In Arlington
Heights, IL Exterior Maintenance
Gutters and downspouts take a beating in winter. Ice can pull fasteners loose, and heavy snow loads can bend sections or separate seams.
In spring, confirm gutters are secure and pitched correctly, and clear out debris that blocks water flow. Check that downspouts discharge away from the foundation and aren’t crushed or disconnected.
If you see staining on siding below the gutter line or you notice water pooling near the house, those are signs that drainage needs attention. Gutters are one of the easiest upgrades to overlook, but they play a significant role in protecting the rest of the exterior system.
Siding, Trim, And Caulk Lines For Exterior
Maintenance In Arlington Heights, IL
Next, inspect siding and trim up close. Look for cracks, gaps at seams, loose panels, and soft areas that suggest moisture infiltration. Trim boards and corner details often show the earliest signs of winter expansion and contraction, especially where caulk lines have split.
Pay extra attention around windows and doors. Failed sealant can allow wind-driven rain behind the siding, which may cause hidden rot over time.
If you’re planning broader exterior work, a clear scope can help you organize repairs and upgrades. That’s where a detailed estimate can be invaluable.
Exterior Maintenance Services In Arlington
Heights, IL: Ventilation And Attic Clues
Some exterior problems are easier to detect from the inside. Check your attic for damp insulation, water stains, moldy odors, or daylight shining through the roof decking.
Those symptoms can indicate roof leaks, poor ventilation, or a history of ice dams. Bathroom fans venting into the attic instead of outside can also create moisture issues that show up after winter.
If you’re thinking about comfort upgrades along with maintenance, homeowners often plan projects as a coordinated set of improvements, including efficiency improvements for your home. Better ventilation and insulation can reduce winter stress on the roofline and help support more consistent indoor comfort.
Seasonal timing can also affect how work gets scheduled, especially when you’re planning around storm seasons and contractor availability.
When To Call For Home Exterior Maintenance
In Arlington Heights, Illinois
If you find missing shingles, persistent staining, soft trim, loose gutters, or repeated drafts near openings, it’s time to bring in a professional. Exterior maintenance is most effective when problems are identified early and repaired correctly, especially around water-management details like flashing and sealants.
It also helps to work with a team that sets expectations clearly from the start. Clear project boundaries and standards can support a smoother process, especially if your checklist turns into a larger repair plan.
If you want help completing an exterior maintenance checklist in Arlington Heights, IL after winter, and you’d like clear guidance on what to fix now versus what can wait, Apex Exteriors, Inc. can help. To get started, schedule a consultation.

How Do I Know It’s Time For Full Siding Replacement?
If you need expert guidance, that’s what we’re here for. Generally speaking, we’ll consider the age of your siding and look for wear and tear that’s brought it beyond the repair phase. Or, to the point where it makes much more sense to replace it than to keep trying to patch it up.
Some warping, cracking, or peeling paint is fine. But when things like water/wind damage and a dramatic decline in efficiency are on the table, it’s time to consider replacement. For some folks, it’s more about increasing home value and enjoying a new, refreshed, polished aesthetic.
Why should I hire Apex Exteriors to replace my siding?
Great question! Below are the top five reasons you should seriously consider hiring Apex Exteriors to install your new siding:
Experience
We have been installing and repairing siding for over 30 years in Chicagoland so we’ve literally seen it all. This makes a difference because our crew has decades of experience removing, repairing and replacing siding for homeowners. This also tells you that we are in it for the long haul… so if a problem does arise years from now, we will be here to remedy the situation with empathy and professionalism.
Reputation
We have worked diligently to exceed our customers’ expectations, and the proof of those efforts can be found from our reputation online. We have earned 250+ Google Reviews with a 4.8 star rating, earned an A+ rating from the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and have enthusiastic reviews on other review sites like Facebook, Angi and Houzz. You don’t earn this by being average. You don’t even get here by being good at just installing new siding on a home.
We found ourselves here because every employee shows up every day for our customers and we take real pride in our work and it shows.
Labor
Unlike most of the competition, we DO NOT hire out subcontractors to install new siding on our customers’ homes. We exclusively deploy full-time in-house crew members that are continuously trained to OSHA safety standards, fall protection standards, as well as siding installation best practices which keep our installation teams out in front of our competition.
This is a critical point because subcontractors are often unskilled, unsafe, and unreliable, causing major issues on how the siding was installed to your home, the longevity of the installation and for meeting the timeline agreed upon when you signed a contract. Don’t take unnecessary risks with protecting and maintaining what is likely your largest investment. We won’t be.
Certifications & Credentials
We are very proud to have earned the highest level of credentials with James Hardie, the maker of the highly sought-after “HardiePlank” and “HardieShingle” fiber cement premium siding products, often called “Hardie Board.”
We have earned the Hardie Elite Preferred status due to the volume of product we install on homes and buildings in our market but as importantly, because of the extensive training our installation teams have received from James Hardie ensuring that our installations are “by the book” and exactly how James Hardie requires. The required tools, caulking, fastening and flashing are unique to Hardie Board and strict adherence to installation best practices are necessary.
The benefits of this knowledge and partnership are numerous. First off, this gives our customers true peace of mind knowing that a substantial investment in their home’s exterior is going to be completed following the MFG’s best practices the first time by true installation experts. You would be shocked at how many times we’ve had to reinstall Hardie Siding on a home after the homeowner originally hired the “B-Team.”
Lastly, the adherence to these strict manufacturer standards also helps to solidify the product’s 30-year non-prorated warranty. It puts us in a small group of local siding companies and that’s a real distinction with a real difference that our customers value.
Additionally, we have earned the highest level of credentialing with CertainTeed, the maker of the finest replacement vinyl siding available. This is now known as the CertainTeed SidingMaster Premier and formerly known as CertainTeed SidingMaster Select status. This honor places us in the top 1% of siding installation contractors in our market.
The combination of the volume of product we purchase and install, as well as the extensive training and continued education requirements we must meet, elevates Apex Exteriors into exclusive company.
Siding Materials
Siding replacement is really only as good as the siding materials used and the crew actually installing it. Why do we install so much James Hardie fiber cement and CertainTeed vinyl siding? Because they are true leaders in their category and our customers demand and expect the best.
The nearly endless color options and profile selection options with James Hardie products (HardiePlank, HardiePanel, HardieTrim Batten Boards, HardieShingle) and profile options of CertainTeed replacement vinyl siding (Beaded, Shakes and Shingles, Board & Batten, Dutch Lap, Rough Sawn, and Smooth) really deliver on our customers’ design goals.
Sure, we install other products like AZEK lap siding, LP SmartSide, Mastic, and even real cedar siding, but from a cost/benefits perspective these are our top brands we install often and for good reason.
The deep partnerships and accreditations we have earned with both James Hardie and CertainTeed also allow us to provide unmatched extended warranties directly to our customers. This is a real difference our customers value, and we hope you will too.
What should I do to prepare for my homes residing project?
Outdoor Furniture & Grills. Our team will always take precautions to protect your outdoor furniture, BBQ grills and general “valuables” but to avoid any potential, albeit unlikely damage, we would advise that you kindly move any outdoor furniture, umbrellas, bbq grills, etc. as far away from the immediate exterior perimeter of your home.
Window Screens. If you have any window screens on your windows, we would advise that you remove those before our crew arrives to avoid any potential tears. We do our absolute best to avoid nicking existing window screens during the siding installation process, but things can happen on the job site.
Interior Hanging Valuables. If you have any valuable pictures or expensive artwork hanging from your interior walls, we would kindly advise that you remove those from your walls. It’s not common, but hanging art, pictures or other valuables attached to your homes exterior walls could come loose from the hammering or general fastening of the new siding to your home. Better to be safe than sorry here right?
Logistics. If you have a driveway that may be used for our crew’s staging purposes (trucks, materials, saws/tools, dumpster, etc.) we would advise that if you needed to get a car out of your garage to do so ahead of our crew’s arrival to your property ahead of time to ensure we aren’t blocking your access and you aren’t caught in a position where your vehicle is “stuck” until our job is complete.
What Siding Products or Materials Do You Use?
Apex Exteriors proudly installs premium vinyl siding by brands like CertainTeed and Mastic (Ply Gem). We also install a lot of fiber cement siding by the category leader, James Hardie (HardiePlank, HardiePanel, Hardie Architectural Panel, HardieShingle, HardieSoffit, HardieTrim, Hardie Artisan Siding, and HardiePanel with HardieTrim battens).
Additionally, we install more than our fair share of engineered wood siding and trim by LP (Louisiana-Pacific) known as LP SmartSide (Lap Siding, Trim & Fascia, Nickel Gap Siding, Soffit, and Shake Lap Siding).
We also use AZEK Exteriors PVC siding and trim that is quickly gaining popularity due to its extreme durability characteristics. Aluminum siding is nearly extinct due to the cost and alternatives available, but we do carry a metal siding product by EDCO which is made from hot-dipped galvanized steel.
For something altogether different, we also carry and install an engineered mortarless stone veneer product called Versetta Stone which looks great for full exterior walls and accents. Lastly, we still install the “oldies but goodies” like natural western red cedar & eastern white cedar plank/clapboard/lap siding as well as cedar shingle siding.
Sadly we do less and less cedar installation as the years go by due to the ever-increasing costs of natural cedar and the increased competition of man-made alternatives like James Hardie and LP SmartSide that accurately mimic the look of natural cedar with the additional benefits of being nearly maintenance free that today’s customer demands.
Is Your Company Licensed, Bonded & Insured?
This is an important question to ask before signing any contract for any work to be performed on your home by a contractor. Apex Exteriors does hold local licenses in all applicable cities and municipalities that require contractors to be licensed for all work performed in Illinois. We are also insured with an umbrella policy of $5,000,000 in coverage.
Being bonded basically translates to that we (Apex Exteriors) has purchased a surety bond, also known as a third-party guarantee, that is built to protect you financially if we were to fail to complete the job you contracted us to perform, or if we were to violate the terms of our agreement/contract, and lastly if we were to fail to pay our suppliers or applicable subcontractors.
We can also pull any required permits in your city/municipality per your request. FYI – The state of Illinois does not require a license to operate a siding installation company.
Are You Considered An ‘Expensive’ Siding Contractor?
We wouldn’t say we’re known as expensive, but will we put our name on cheap, low-quality siding materials and workmanship? Absolutely not. Our estimates tend to be more in the middle—easy to understand and transparent. We charge reasonable rates for work you can count on, which is why we maintain such a low rate of warranty-related callbacks.
